Revolvers are generally handguns although some early carbines and rifles were produced that utilized a revolving cylinder. Revolvers have a rotating cylinder that holds the rounds to be fired, generally revolver cylinders hold between 5 and 9 rounds based on the size of the cartridge and intended use of the revolver.
By either cocking the hammer (single action revolver) or pulling the trigger (double action revolver) the cylinder is rotated, bringing a chamber in line with the bore. As the bullet exits the chamber it must jump across the cylinder gap, or the space between the cylinder and the barrel, this gap leads to some loss in velocity.
