Reduced Loads for New Hunters
My hunting tip for young hunters.
Fathers teaching their sons at an early age to hunt big game is a great opportunity at age 10. This is the age you can take your son or daughter to get his or her hunter safety class card and legally be allowed to accompany a legal hunting licensed adult on any big game hunt. I have become familiar recently with a great tip for edging young hunters into the world of shooting a .30-06 with Remington’s reduced load cartridges.
They make a reduced load cartridge of 150 grain .30-06 that has a greatly reduced felt recoil that you can edge your young hunter into shooting confidently with. Once they are at ease shooting the 150 grain reduced load cartridge, you can get them into the full 180 grain loads for .30-06. It has been a fantastic training tool for my own son to learn shooting on his very own .30-06 this year! I know from experience that it was difficult to get him to shoot anything higher then a .22, due to his being intimidated of any gun larger than that. The fear and respect of the destructive power a .30-06 has is a healthy thing for young hunters to have. But I know just how difficult it can be to coax them into shooting one finally; and this reduced load is the perfect tool! Hopefully this little tip will be the perfect tool for all those of you out there looking for some help getting your young hunters comfortable enough with shooting a .30-06. And just as a reminder... the reduced load is perfectly capable of taking any deer or elk as well. My son shot his first deer with the reduced Remington 150 grain .30-06 cartridge!
