REELFOOT LAKE—I would like to know something about Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee. In what part of the state is it and how is hunting, trapping and fishing there? Is it a healthful place? I am thinking of going there next fall; what would be the best way to go?
Reelfoot Lake lies in the north-western corner of Tennessee, breaking over the line into Kentucky at the northern end. It lies parallel with the Mississippi River and only a few miles distant. The lake is about forty miles long and from four to ten miles wide. It is filled with partly submerged trees for the lake was caused by an earthquake, and the country sunk down and filled up with water from the Mississippi. There used to be good trapping there for coons, mink, otters, etc. and doubtless it is good yet, but the people who live there seem to consider all the game, fish and, fur their own and resent intrusion. For that reason I would not advise you to locate there. The hunting and fishing is said to be very good. Reelfoot Lake is now under control of the government.
