Recoil shields are found on revolvers and are the metal wings that are part of the breech. Recoil shields are designed to prevent the rounds in the cylinder from backing out when the revolver is inverted or fired. Without the recoil shield the rounds could partially slide out of the chamber and lock the cylinder.
