Reloading-Powder Charge-What charge of powder should I use in my .32-40 Marlin to get the same velocity as the U.M.C. and Savage H.P. cartridges? I have a copy of the Ideal Handbook, but I think the charge recommended there is too light.
In reloading this cartridge with the gas check bullet I would not advise exceeding the given charge of 23 grains Lightning powder. This standard was established after exhaustive tests by men who knew what they were doing, and I have no doubt that it is the most satisfactory charge. We also know that it is a safe one to use, and it is always best for the novice to let others do the experimenting with smokeless powders. The only think you will gain by reloading with these bullets is to prolong the life of the barrel.
