REBORING .22 LONG—Would it be advisable to have a .22 Long re-bored for a .22 Special? Would it have the same shooting qualities as, a new gun made for that cartridge? Can you give me the address of a firm that will re-bore rifles?
There is no cartridge made, to my knowledge, known as the .22 Special. If you mean the cartridge made especially for the Model 1890 Winchester, it is called by the Winchester people the .22 Winchester Rim Fire, and by the Remington Arms—U. M. C. Co., the .22 Winchester, Model 1890. This is the same caliber as other .22’s, but the bullet is seated inside the shell and the shell is of greater diameter than that of the .22 Long. It may be possible to re-chamber the rifle to use this cartridge, but it could not be re-bored. The twist for the .22 W. R. F. is one turn in fourteen inches, and for the .22 Long it is usually one turn in twenty inches, but sometimes as short as one in sixteen Inches. I believe it would be practical to re-chamber the rifle for the .22 W. R. F. if the action will handle it, for the cartridge over all is about I-16 inch longer than the .22 Long, but I could not say that it would shoot as well as a rifle built for this cartridge.
