RATTLESNAKE SKINS—HOW TO TAN—Kindly give me a method of curing and dressing the skins of snakes so that I can preserve them and keep them pliable.
I do not know of any really good way. I have seen rattlesnake skins tanned by stretching on a board, flesh side out and dusting the skins generously with powdered alum and salt. After it is thoroughly dried it may be softened to some extent by rubbing on the flesh side with the bowl of a spoon, and it will remain in that condition, but if it is handled much the scales are bound to come off.
