RABBIT SKIN ROBE—HOW MADE | |

RABBIT SKIN ROBE—HOW MADE—Kindly tell me how to make the rabbit skin robe of the North and how many skins are required?
The rabbits arc skinned carefully, and then cut green into strips, s quarter of an inch wide. In drying, the skin curls, making a string with the hair outside. These strings are then woven with the simple over- and under weave on a frame like a quilting frame, with horizontal strips of skin, while the other strings are threaded over and under across the horizontal strips. The weave need not be pulled very tight. The hair sheds so easy that for houses and camps it is best to enclose the whole business in a muslin oo cheesecloth cover, quilted every square foot or so to hold in place. It takes about 100 northern hare, or “rabbit” skins to make a robe about seven feet square; it would take more than two hundred cotton tail skins, I should judge.
