POCKET RIFLE—Will some one of the experienced trappers tell me which is the best for the trap line, the revolver or the rifle, and the best make, caliber and length of barrel?
Generally speaking the rifle is by far the handiest gun, but it will depend much on conditions. If you are not particularly anxious to kill all of the game met with, and if there is no large game, a .22 caliber target pistol or a pocket rifle is often all that is needed. The Stevens Pocket Rifle (with 10 or 12 inch barrel), is a very handy gun and remarkably accurate. I always carry a Diamond Model Pistol with 10 inch barrel and peep sight. I use only the short smokeless cartridges and its performance is perfect. I also carry a high powered rifle when in a big game country, and use to carry a shot gun when trapping where only small game was found. As there are such great differences of opinion regarding guns and there are so many conditions to be considered, it is impossible to give a definite answer.
