Pitting on a firearm is the result of rust and is generally a sign that the firearm has been neglected. Pitting was far more common with black powder and the residue left after firing black powder becomes corrosive when it comes in contact with the moisture in the air. The older style corrosive primers also caused a great deal of pitting.
