PEACE RIVER COUNTRY—What is the best route to take to get into the Peace River country?
You do not say whether you wish to go into Peace River with settler’s effects or traveling light to see the country. If the former, the Edmonton Athabasca route would be best; but if the latter I think the Cariboo Road leading out of Ashcroft, B. C., to Quesnell, thence to Fort George, would be the nicest way to go. From Quesnell, B. C., 227 miles; from Ashcroft to Fort George 110 miles by steamboat, thence by canoe to Giscomb Portage, 37 miles. Portage 3 miles into Mommit Lake (a portager with team lives at the Port age), thence into Crooked River, thence into Parsnip River, thence into Peace River—all downstream except from Quesnell, B. C. to Gitcomb Portage, 147 miles up Fraser River. There are two portages to make on the Peace; three, if the party are not good canoe men.
