PACK SADDLE AND LOAD—What is the most popular kind of pack saddle and what is the best way of securing a load on it? How many pounds will a good horse carry comfortably on the week’s trip?
There is only one style of pack saddle, but of course they are not all good. As old, sway-hacked horses are used mostly, one should see that the saddle is not too long or it will hurt the horse, and it should be remembered that the best saddle is the one which fits the horse best. See that it is well rigged and that good leather is used throughout. Be sure that breeching and breast straps are long enough for a full size horse. The maximum amount of goods that a horse may carry is 200 pounds; if the trip is of several days’ duration, 150 pounds: while, if the trip is long and strenuous, and the horses must pick their living at night, a pack of 100 pounds weight is plenty.
