OTTER SET—Can someone give a good otter set where the water is deep?
Select a place near a deep, dark pool, where the otter goes to fish and the water is not very swift. Drive three stakes in a triangle 8 inches apart, drive them down firmly, and with a sharp knife cut off the tops about 6 inches under water and sharpen the tops. Next, get a heavy sod, 12 or 14 inches in diameter, turn the grass side down and press down firmly onto the stakes, letting it just touch the bank, and so it will be under water 3 or 4 inches. Drape this all over with stringy moss, to give it an old appearance. Prepare this sometime before you set the trap. When you want to set the trap, cut a nest in the sod just the shape and size of the trap, set the trap in the nest, the top just level with the top of the sod, and cover with moss. Use fish-oil or otter musk for scent, on a stick stuck in the bank 14 inches above the trap. This set can only be used where the water retains practically same level or depth.
