Otter-Scent-Is there any kind of scent, easily made, that will attract otters a distance of sixty feet, and how would you use it?
I have never known of any scent that is very attractive to otters, and none of those that I know of will draw an otter far out of his course. The northern Indians use the oil glands of the beaver. A small portion is placed on a stick and this stick is thrust into the bank about a food above the water, the trap being set under water, bellow and some distance in fron of the scent. Dead brush is set up at the sides of the trap, so that the otter must approach from in front. The Indians have great faith in this scent, but they always set the trap near where the otter will pass as possible. There may be some combinations of fish oil and such things that will attract the otter, but I am inclined to think that none will decoy them very far. Some people claim that skunk perfume is a good scent for otters.
