NOTES FROM NEW YORK

As I have never written to any magazine I thought that I would tell you of my luck trapping and my outfit. For traps I use the Jump, Victor, Stop Thief and tree traps. I like to have a good assortment, as you can set in most any place you come to and under all conditions. I have a pack basket to carry my traps and bait in also. It helps a lot when you have quite a bunch of fur; also when I start on the trap line there is a Damascus axe on my belt and last but not least, a .22 caliber pistol which I have never had until this last season and would not be without one at twice the cost. This winter was a pretty good year for trappers here and they all got a good catch. I, for one, caught 85 rats and 11 skunk, eight of them black. Can you beat that? I never heard of that before and the man that I sell to said "You must be a Jonah on catching black ones," and I told him that nothing but a good one would get in my traps and if they did it was a mistake.

Game is holding its own pretty good here and pheasants are getting thicker, as we liberate some every year. Foxes and mink are almost all gone. I wish that the former was all gone, as I think that they catch many grouse and pheasants when the snow is deep and the young ones are not large enough to get away.

I see that some of the boys protest against the automatic shotgun. I owned one this last fall and could not get as much with it as I can with the gun that I have now, an Ithaca, light twelve gauge with good drop stock. The trouble with the auto was it shot too close for bird shooting and was too heavy and hardly enough drop to suit me, nevertheless it was a good gun for squirrel and ducks.

Just a word more and I will close, as I want to say a word about my dog. He is a cocker spaniel and a fine one, too, thoroughly broke. I have had him only about a month and can hardly wait until next fall, as I expect to have great sport with him.
