A New Sight For A New .22 Rifle | |
|
There is one fault common with so many .22 caliber repeaters upon the market to-day that one can safely say is not shared by the Marlin company's latest .22 caliber rifle, their model 32. The combination of sights with which they regularly equip this weapon show a decided desire to meet the demand among .22 rifle users for a rear sight that can be instantly, easily and accurately adjusted for the different lengths of cartridges and the different ranges at which they are used. Most .22 rifles shoot excellently without shifting the sights with the short shells, but when we come to try out the long rifle size at ranges up to 200 yards we find we have got to spend a little time in learning just how to hold our gun to hit the target. The common .22 rear sight is adjustable only by means of a set screw and it is next to impossible to shift its elevation to a certain position and then back again with absolute accuracy without a little testing upon a target. When we consider that when shooting the long rifle cartridge in a rifle sighted for 200 yards, 20.7 inches at 100 yards and 16 inches at 150 yards, the value of a sight which can be adjusted either way in a second with precision will be instantly realized. The new Marlin sight has on either side of its flat "V" notched bar a small ratchet wheel, one of which gives ten graduations for adjustment and the other for lateral movement to take care of windage. Thus when the shooter wants to change his shells or range, the necessary adjustment can be accomplished without trouble. A little previous target work will show him what notches are suitable for the different sorts of shooting and the "click" of the ratchet at each notch tells him just what he is doing. The front sight on this model is the Marlin standard ivory bead, a fitting companion for the ingenious adjustable rear sight. Convenient and adjustable sights are not, however, the only good features of this new .22 repeater. If you are in need of such a rifle I would certainly advise a careful examination of its action, take-down system, safety features and general build and make-up. You will be assured that this company has not lost the ability to turn out a gun which shows evidence of attaining the popularity of their world famous models '92 and '97.
