NEW MEXICO—Can you or some H-T-T reader tell me of the principal industries and climate of New Mexico?
As to climate, New Mexico has one of the best and is one of the most healthful in the world. The climate is famed for curing lung trouble and throat diseases. Spring generally opens up in the fourth month and frost comes about the first of tenth mouth. In summer the temperature is seldom above 90 degrees and in winter it sometimes goes to 12 or 11 degrees below zero, but it is a dry cold and does not pinch as much as the damp cold weather of the East. In summer the days are warm and sunny and the nights cold. It snows a great deal in the mountains in the winter. Our rainy season generally comes in the seventh and eighth mouths. We have from 300 to 325 days of sunshine every year. It is warmer in the southern part of the state. This report is for the northern part.
The principal occupations of the people are farming, mining, stock- raising and lumbering. The price of farm land is from $5to $250 per acre. Unimproved land without water-right can be bought for $5 to $25 per acre, while the improved land can be bought for $5 to $300 per acre. There is homestead land that is still open to entry here in Taos County. Those who are taking up homesteads here are going to raise crops without irrigation, or what we term dry farming. The feathered game here is wild turkey, grouse, all kinds of ducks, doves and quail (protected).
