Muskrat-Winter Trapping-How can I catch muskrats in winter? They are quite plentiful on the creek but have no houses.
Muskrats may be trapped at the entrances of their dens almost as well in winter as in the fall, the only trouble being in finding the dens in the bank after the streams are covered with ice. Good dens may be marked while the streams is still open by setting a small stake on the bank and if there is any rat territory that cannot be trapped during the fall season it will often pay to go over the ground and mark the dens before the ice forms. Dens may sometimes be located by sounding the ice. Just in front of the den it will give a hollow sound. One may also locate them sometimes by sounding the bank when the ground is frozen. Wherever there are open rapids on the stream the muskrats will be coming out occasionally and may be trapped with bait.
