MUSKRAT TRAPS—How can I trap muskrats in a lake where they have houses after the water is frozen?
Muskrats are easily caught in winter, where they build houses. Cut a hole in the side of the house, no larger an opening than necessary, and set the trap inside on the highest spot you can find. Fasten it to a stick outside of the house and close the hole as tightly as possible. If there is snow, bank plenty of it over the break. Look at the traps evening and morning. In many states destroying or damaging houses is unlawful and cannot be done. In such instances they must be caught when they are away from the house. No trapper should destroy a house making no difference whether unlawful or not.
