Muskrat Spear-Can you describe a muskrat spear and tell how it is used?
A muskrat spear is made by fitting a wooden handle, a broom handle is good, with a three-eighth inch steel rod, two feed or more long, and shaping the rod to a long sharp point. The rod is driven into the end of the handle, which has an iron band to keep it from splitting. It is used after the ice has formed by approaching the house very quietly and driving the spear into it, aiming at the center. The house must be cut open to secure the animals, if any have been struck by the spear. The spear is of no value where the muskrats live in the holes in the bank. Another form of spear consists of a block, a foot square, containing a number of these long tines. It is driven into the house from the top. The objection to spears for muskrats is that the houses must be broken open to secure the catch, also the skins are more or less damaged.
