Muskrat-Sign, Etc.-If a female muskrat averages 15 young a year, why is it that when tracks are plentiful I can catch five or six in one or two nights and then cannot catch another if I keep traps set a week, and why will there be no more fresh tracks?
Only a small percent of the muskrats born each year live until the trapping season. This accounts for the comparatively small number. In regard to tracks and other signs, muskrats are more active in late summer and early fall than at any other time of the year and at that time will make perhaps ten times the amount of sight that they do in November.
