Muskrat-Method for Catching-What do you consider a good method for catching muskrats in the Winter when the stream is frozen over?
Find where they come through air holes along a lake, cove or slough, and set trap on the bottom. These holes are generally in grass or where springs come out of the lake bank. I have caught them by cutting through the ice and setting snares over their holes, previously discovered and marked on the bank-a knife blaze on an alder, or a twig stuck in the ground. Entrances to burrows and open brooks and streams, followed by rats, are excellent winter trap sites. Many of the winter methods used for mink are also excellent for trapping muskrat.
