Muskrats-House and Bank Rats-Are there two kinds of muskrats, such as house rats and bank rats?
The big Norway rat, of dock, pier, ship and household ill-fame, and the muskrat are separate beasts, though both are rodents. The Norway rat reaches an immense size, however, and the Japanese made ear flaps for their soldiers of their hides, captured during a war of extermination, compelled by the Bubonic Plague, the rats carrying the germs. The muskrat sometimes comes up drains and I have seen then under house floors, but they are a marsh and bank burrowing animal, unlike the Norway rat, which is found around buildings and towns, usually along sea shores.
