MOUTHPIECE FOR HUNTING HORN—What kind of a mouthpiece do hunters use on homemade horns?
Most hunters use a regular band instrument mouthpiece on a homemade hunting horn, I would advise J. P. to send to some brass band instrument company and get a French model mouthpiece. If your horn is about twelve inches long get a B flat cornet mouthpiece; if it is fifteen to twenty inches long, get an E flat alto mouthpiece. Be sure to get the German silver French model, as they are cheapest and as good as any for a hunting horn. I think the price of the B flat cornet mouthpiece is about thirty- five cents and the E flat alto about forty-five cents. I am a hunter and a band man, so I have used all kinds of mouthpieces. Some hunters make a mouthpiece of a wooden spool by hollowing out one end and cutting the rim from the other end, but these are not very good. In the winter, before, putting the mouth piece to your lips you should warm it a little by holding it in your hand, or by blowing warm breath on it, or it will freeze to your lips if very cold.
