MODEL ‘86 EXPRESS—I would like to have some information regarding the .50-110-300 Winchester express rifle, model ‘86. Is it sufficiently accurate for hunting big game and what is the limit of its accurate range? What about the wearing qualities of the barrel?
None of the express rifles are intended for long range shooting, nor are they, as a rule, accurate at long ranges. In all of them the powder charge is extremely heavy compared with the weight of the bullet and this causes inaccuracy and rapid loss of velocity at long range. They were devised with the object of getting an extremely high velocity and fiat trajectory (with black powder) at short ranges. Since the invention of the powerful small bores, these express rifles are out of date and the makers have found it necessary to design more modern cartridges. The .50. 110 H. V. is really a powerful gun.
