Mink-Varieties, Etc.-I would like to have some information regarding mink; how many young do they have at a litter and how many litters a year? Is there more than one variety?
Mink have one litter per year, and from one to six young at a litter. They are born in early April or May, earlier South and later North. He also wants to know if there are more than one variety. According to “American Animals,” by Stone and Cram, there are four, as follows:
Northern mink, length 21 inches; dark brown with white spots on chin. Range, northern parts of North America, south in Alleghenies to Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
Southern mink, larger, 28 inches and lighter than above. Range, coast of Southern New England, through lowlands to North Carolina.
Louisiana mink, similar to last, but smaller with longer head, and still lighter. Range, coasts of Louisiana and Texas.
Florida mink, similar to last, but smaller with longer head and still lighter. Range, salt marshes of Southern States, South Carolina to Florida.
I know these different varieties do not interest the trapper, size and color being all that he is interested in, but they are interesting from a naturalist’s point of view.
