Mink-Three Legged-Have any of the readers ever caught a mink that has twisted a leg off? I never have, and old trappers tell me that they always crawl into a hole and die.
I have caught several mink that had a few toes missing and once knew of a man catching five mink in one season that had twisted off feet when caught earlier in the fall. One of them was caught several months after. I have known of other instances of a similar nature and also once caught a skunk that had twisted its leg off at the shoulder, the wound having healed over nicely. It is my opinion that this amputation seldom proves fatal unless the animal injures itself internally while struggling, although I know that it sometimes leads to blood poisoning and then the animal surely die.
