MICHIGAN LANDS, FURS, ETC—What is the nature of the land in Roscommon Co., Mich.; is it hilly or level? What furbearing and game animals are found there and especially around Houghton Lake? Is there timber and plenty of wood?

The most of the land is hilly, some of it very much so and nearly all of it poor and sandy. There is very little farm land and it is all in the west side of the county. The timber is nearly all cut off or burned up. No furbearing animals or game in numbers. I was near a trapper’s cabin all the fall and early winter of ‘09 and two men with 150 traps caught only 11 rats and 1 mink. Roscommon County is in the Southern Peninsula, but pretty well towards the northern part.
