Mink-Their Habits-Since our first heavy snowfall I have not been able to trap any mink, nor do I see any signs of them. Just before the snowfall we had a hard rain that made the creek look like a river. Do you suppose the high water drove the mink away? The stream is not frozen yet. I caught five mink before the storm.
I the north mink are never active after deep snow comes, and while the trapper can catch an occasional one through the winter, the northern trapper consider the mink trapping ended after the first deep snow comes. It is likely, too, that the five which you caught were the only ones that traveled regularly on that stream. High water would not drive them away.
