Maxim Silencer-What is your opinion of the Maxim Silencer and how far can the discharge of a .30 caliber rifle be heard when fitted with one? Do they make a rifle clumsy or retard the movement of the gun for rapid handling and shooting? Does the gun shoot just as powerful and accurate as without the silencer?
Some have been pretty sarcastic about the utility of the Maxim Silencers; like all improvements, however, they have their usefulness. It depends on conditions of atmosphere how far a sound can be heard; I understand the Silencer reduces the sound more than half under some circumstances and with some cartridges, as with the .30-30 and in others, as in small calibers and charges, much more than half-practically makes the .22 rimfire inaudible. Clumsy is a relative term, and a matter of habit. If I put on a Maxim Silencer, it would be on a short barrel-say on a carbine. Then the rifle with a Silencer would be no longer than a rifle with a long barrel. No difference in accuracy or power is noticed.
