Marten-What They Live On-I would like to know what a marten lives on. Is he a varmint? I am a park ranger in Washington and would like to know.
The marten lives principally, I think on woods mice, rabbits, red squirrels, and occasionally he captures grouse. I am not sure what you mean by “varmint,” but if you mean noxious, harmful animal-one that should be destroyed-will say that he is not that kind. The marten is a valuable furbearing animal. The only really harmful animals that you will find in your part of the country are the mountain lion, wolf, coyote and if sheep are raised there, the wild cat. Some people would include the porcupine in the list also, as it does considerable damage to timber. Of course, there are other animals there that kill game, but the harm done by them amounts to practically nothing.
