MARTINGAL, in the Manege. A thong of leather fastened to one of the girths under the belly of a horse, and at the other end to the mussroll, to hinder him from rearing or throwing up his head : for a hunter it is generally fastened to the reins by rings, and has no effect at a leap. When the rider gives his horse the head, this is called a running martingal.
