MARKING TRAPS—Is there any way by which I can write my name on steel traps, by means of acid? I have tried punching my name on them but it doesn’t work well.

Warm the trap and rub a wax candle over the part where you want to have your name. When it cools there will be a thin film of wax covering the iron. With a pointed instrument, write your name in the wax, cutting through to the metal. Then take four parts of muriatic acid and one part of nitric acid, mix, and pour a few drops into the marks in the wax. It will eat the name into the metal in a very short time. It should then be thoroughly washed. Use care that you do not get it on your hands, or on other parts of the trap.
