RAWHIDE-HOW TO MAKE-How is rawhide made?
Rawhide is oiled calfskin or kip leather, untanned The following method of preparing rawhide is from The Farmer’s Tanning Guide: Take 1 1/2 pints sulphuric acid and pour it slowly into 1 1/2 pints soft water (this amount for a common sized cow hide). Put the hide, flesh side up, on the table and thoroughly wet the flesh side with the acid and water by means of a cloth or sponge tied to a stick. Fold flesh sides together and let it stand only 20 minutes, having ready a solution of soda and water, one pound of soda to 16 quarts of water, and let the skin soak in this two hours; then wash in clean water and apply a little dry salt, letting it lie in the salt 12 hours. Tack to beam and remove all the flesh, and soak a few minutes in water, then sponge onto the flesh side, neat’s-foot oil, and hang up to dry: work well while drying. then dry it is ready for use.
