BUCKSHOT (HOW TO LOAD)—I would like to have some old hunter tell me bow to load buckshot—how many in a twelve gauge shell? This is something that I have never seen discussed.
A number of years ago I did a lot of experimenting with buck shot, trying all the reasonable ways that I knew of, and concluded the best way was to load the shot is layers, and fill up between with very fine soft shot The first thing is to get buckshot that fits your gun. Take the gun to a sporting goods or hardware store; shove a felt wad from the breech to within one-fourth inch of the muzzle, then try different sizes of shot until you get the size that will just fit when three are placed together on the wad. . They must not be too-loose, neither tight enough to pinch. The size that fits thus is the kind to buy. Load three layers or nine buckshot to a load. In experimenting with, one certain gun, twelve gauge, I tried this load of shot with various loads of black powder, and finally settled onto a four dram load, for that gun. It is a pretty heavy load, too much for regular use, but it did the best work. A load of three and a fourth drams of bulk smokeless is about right. Without the fine shot filled in around the buckshot the load spreads much more.
