The Last Two Types of Guns
After the cartridge was invented two general types of guns came into use and these are known as (1) the rifle and (2) the shotgun.
The rifle is a gun of quite small bore, has a rifled barrel, and uses a cartridge with a bullet, while the shotgun is a gun having a large, smooth bore and uses a shell, that is, a large cartridge in which shot are loaded.
After the invention of the single-shot breech loading gun, the cartridge magazine gun which would shoot a number of rounds invited the attention of inventors, though the idea of a repeating gun was not at all new, but the means were at hand to fulfill the conditions required and the repeating gun came forth, as we shall presently see.
