KILLING DISTANCE OF .30-30—Is the Winchester Model 0804 rifle, .30-30 caliber, a good rifle for deer and wolves? What is its killing distance?
The .30-30 caliber rifle is probably the most popular rifle now manufactured for hunting deer, bears, and similar game. Rifles of this caliber are made by the Winchester, Remington, Marlin and Stevens companies, and they are all good and popular arms. The Remington Arms—U. M. C. Co., give the accurate range of the .30-30 at 500 to 700 yards. I am not sure just what this means, and though t have used .30-33 caliber rifles for hunting I have ever tried them at very long range and can’t say how far they would kill. I am sure, though, that if you hit the proper spot you could kill a deer sometimes at any distance up to 600 yards. If writers would be more explicit when sending such questions we could probably give a better answer. Except in the mountain country of the West, and about the lakes of the North, very little game is shot at or even seen at greater distances than too yards, and most of it is killed at less than 100 yards.
