IVORY BEAD FRONT SIGHT—I have a Lyman Ivory head front sight on my Marlin rifle and the ivory has turned yellow; how can I make it white again? The bluing is also coming off the steel so that it shines; how can I color it again?
The ivory is stained from the oil used on the gun and I don’t know any way to make it white. You can reblue the base by holding it in a gas or alcohol flame until it turns blue, then plunge into clear, cold water. It must be wiped clean before heating, and you must be careful not to heat the ivory tip.
