INHABITED DENS—What is a reliable sign to show whether a hole is inhabited by some animal?
It is a simple matter to distinguish between inhabited dens and those which are not occupied. Dens which are occupied show fresh wear at the entrance, claw marks if occupied by skunks, hair sometimes, also frequently droppings nearby. Unused dens look old, show green mold frequently and are often filled, or partly filled, with leaves.
