INDIAN LANGUAGEŚCan you give list of names, terms, etc., used by the Indians and the meaning of same in our language?
You evidently are under the impression that the Indians were a race speaking the same language, like the English and German races of today. As a matter of fact there were some 770 different languages spoken by the natives of America, 440 in North America and 330 in South America.
Doubtless all these had words for the items mentioned; but to give one would necessitate a list of the whole 770 and this I cannot give. As a rule, however, no one but chiefs and head men received any salutation whatever. These usually consisted of a harangue detailing all the blessings the speaker wished the party spoken to, to receive, together with a few words respecting the Great Spirit, and possibly some other lesser lights of the spirit world. If you intend to go into the study of aboriginal language, I can give you a list of dictionaries treating the language of some of the best known tribes.
