HUNTING WITH FALCONS—What is “hawking” and how is it done, also what is the “Art of Falconry?“ Please let me know what kind of sport this is and if it ever was practiced in America?
Hawking or hunting with falcons was practiced in Persia and by eastern nobility. It is simply hunting with a kind of a hawk—the falcon. The peregrine falcon of the United States might be trained to hunt game up to the size of fawns. It is simply a question of training the birds to retrieve game flushed or jumped in the open field. Falcons were used, but I do not know that this sport was ever tried in America. In China falcons are trained to hunt and cormorants to fish. Occasionally stories of the modern sport crop up in the magazines.
