HOW TO TAN ALLIGATORS—Will you tell me how and what to use in tanning alligator hides? They are as common as mud turtles in Illinois. I understand taking the scale from skins—the tanning is what I want?
There are many tanning recipes; alum and salt in equal parts dissolved in hot water, say a pound of each to a gallon of water. Soak the skins in clean water till thoroughly soft, and then put in the tanning liquor for five to ten days, depending on thickness. You may add a quarter of a pound of japonica to this solution, which will make the skin more able to resist the water. Of course, there are various dressings to put on skins for coloring them, polishing them, etc., after tanning.
