HOW TO RAISE BELGIAN HARES | |
|
HOW TO RAISE—My folks raised these animals once for about three years; we had at one time 70 of them. I took most of the care of them.
They can be kept in hutches with half inch mesh wire around it. The hutches want to be 3 feet long and1 1/2 feet wide. Each hutch must have a box 18 x 10x 10 with a hole cut in one end of it so they can enter; this is necessary for the does for they will have their young in this box.
As to feed, they can be kept on almost anything. I feed ours on wild oats (never feed ground oats or they will die); hay and green grass but not very much grass at one time. Always keep a good supply of fresh water for them.
One buck will serve 8 or 10 does. The does can have young in one month hut they wouldn’t stand twelve litters a year. They have from 8 to 20 in a litter. We had one old doe that had 17 young ones and raised 15 of them.
