How can I remove lead from my rifle barrel? | |
|
There are two methods to pursue when a rifle barrel becomes leaded. The first, to be employed in severe cases, is to cork up the breech end, pour in a small quantity of mercury (quicksilver), then plug up the muzzle and lay the gun away for several days, taking care to turn it about a few times to make sure the mercury comes in contact with all parts of the interior. Mercury possesses an affinity for lead and will generally remove it by virtue of this property. The second course to be pursued in mild cases is to use vigorously a good stiff brass or steel wire scratch brush moistened with Winchester Crystal Cleaner on the bore. This will remove the deposits of lead, although it takes perseverance to do a thorough job.
