HORNS—Can you tell how to remove the pith or core from the horns of cattle, sheep or goats?
Put the horns in water and keep them in a warm place a few days when they can be worked loose and drawn off. They can be made up in pretty match safes, ink stands, etc., with the silver plated mountings furnished by dealers for mounting deer feet. Also hat racks, stools and similar things can be made of suitable horns. I have seen a beautiful arm chair the frame of which was polished steer horns.
There are several processes of polishing horns hut the general idea as about as follows: First rough off and trim into shape with a coarse file or cabinet rasp; next scrape with glass, then rub with medium sandpaper, follow with fine sand paper. Next rub with powdered pumice stone on a cloth moistened with linseed oil, then with putty powder or oxide of zinc mixed with vinegar, after which finish by rubbing with a dry piece of felt or the palm of the hand. The principle is to have each operation remove all marks or scratches of the preceding one. It is hardly necessary to add that a goodly amount of elbow grease is necessary to produce the best results.
