HOMESTEADING IN WESTERN CANADA

HOMESTEADING IN WESTERN CANADA—Your answer to the question regarding homesteading in Western Canada, in the March number, interested us, and we would like to know what part two young men should go to. What is the climate and what game and furbearers are found there, and how long would we have to hold our homesteads before we could part wish them in case we didn’t like that kind of place? What kind of an outfit should we have to start with?

I have not kept very well informed on the settlement in Canada, but believe that most of the people are going into the extreme northern part of Alberta and Saskatchewan. It gets pretty cold there in winter, 40 or 50 degrees below zero sometimes I guess, but I understand that the snowfall is not very heavy as a rule. I don’t doubt that some of the readers can answer this fully, and will probably do so, and an answer or rather a correction of my answer appears in the “Answers from the Readers” of this number, that will interest you. You will find some game and furbearers all over that country, though as I said before neither hunting nor trapping is of the best. The furbearing animals are principally coyotes, mink and muskrats, with a more varied line in the mountains of Alberta. When it comes to an outfit I must leave that to you. You can leave the place and come back to “the States” any time you like, but you can’t sell it until you have lived on it the required length of time and “proved up” on it, but you can sell your improvements at any time if you can get some party interested, and then relinquish it to that party, who will homestead it in the same way you would have dons. After filing on one homestead you cannot take up another in Canada, even if you sell that one or leave it.
