Hangfire refers to the delayed ignition of the primary powder charge, after the trigger has been pulled, for any reason. Hangfires are dangerous due to the fact that once the shot is anticipated and does not occur, the shooter may not be in a position to ensure that the firearm is pointed in a safe direction or holding the firearm in such a way that the recoil can be absorbed safely. Most hangfires will discharge within 10 second of the trigger being pulled if they are going to discharge.
