Handgun Hunting Ammuntion | |
|
Choosing the correct hunting ammunition for your handgun is critical to your success. If the round is not up to the task you may have a very long track in your future or worse you have a trophy animal that gets away only to die later.
Bullet Construction
When selecting the proper load for your hunting handgun, you must consider what you are hunting. A round that was designed for self defense, plinking or small game will not stand up to the thicker bones and body of a white tailed deer or bear. Choose ammunition that was expressly loaded for hunting. Most of the big ammunition manufacturers have begun to offer ammo that is designed for the handgun hunter.
Usually this ammo is either hard cast or flat nosed jacketed, although Nosler and a few other premium bullet manufacturers have come out with some very impressive jacketed handgun hunting bullets.
Bullet Weight
Handguns are not meant to be a long range hunting arm, they are short range and as such they benefit from the extra hitting power that a heavy for caliber round offers. Select you bullets at the top of the weight range for any given caliber, you give up some velocity, but you gain bone smashing mass.
Remember, while any handgun bullet can kill, you want to tip the odds in your favor by selecting a round that is expressly designed for hunting. You owe it to the animal you are hunting, to ensure that the round you have selected is going to penetrate deeply while under controlled expansion to ensure a clean kill.
