Gun Stock Refinishing-Could an inexperienced person remove the varnish from a gun stock and oil it? How should it be done?
Not knowing how you work I wouldn’t advise you try to refinish your gun stock, but anybody who is reasonably careful can do this. Remove the stock and wood slide and with the finest grade sandpaper take off the varnish, or you can use a varnish remover which can be bought at a paint store, and this may be better as the vanish soon fills up a piece of sandpaper and renders it useless. After the vanish is removed rub it lightly across the grain with worn 00 sandpaper, but not much along the place where the metal has been fitted, and when it is very smooth get some wood filler colored with burnt sienna and apply this. It will fill up the pores and make a very smooth surface. Then apply hot linseed oil and let it dry, after which you give it another coat of oil, and another, the more the better.
