Gun Shy Dogs
The breaking of a gun-shy dog requires a large amount of patience and perseverance, and cannot be accomplished in a day or a week.
The first thing to do is to win the dog’s confidence if you haven’t it already. Speak pleasantly to him and do everything you can to keep him in good spirits. Put a collar and chain on him and go out into the fields. Have someone accompany you, while you lead the dog have your helper step off quite a distance and fire a gun or pistol. Be sure that you are far enough away from the gun that your dog is not too badly scared. Now, if your dog did not notice the first shot, have your helper cone a little nearer and shoot again. Do not speak to the dog. Just act as if nothing unusual had happened. If the dog lays down on the ground on hearing the shot, stand still until he gets over his fright and then try to lead him quietly home. If he tries to break away and run hold him by the chain but do not say a word, or jerk him, or he will become more frightened than ever. After he settles down lead him quietly away. This is enough for the first lesson. Repeat this every day or every time you have a chance.
After a time the dog will not pay any attention to the shooting as long as it is done at a distance, then have yur helper come a little nearer each day until finally you can stand over him and shoot.
